Reading textiles as systems of knowledge

Reading textiles as systems of knowledge

How do textiles communicate, and whose knowledge is recognised through the ways they are made and understood? Join artist Hellen Ascoli for a conversation exploring how textiles hold and communicate knowledge. Drawing on her practice as a weaver, her work with the back-strap loom and her experiences of migration and translation, Ascoli considers how meaning is shaped by the relationships between bodies, materials and cultural contexts. Through weaving, she invites us to think about how different systems of knowledge are understood, what gets overlooked, and how we might learn to read them differently. Please note that doors open at 18:30 and the talk begins at 19:00. Hellen Ascoli is the first recipient of the newly established residency series generously supported by The Jorge M. Pérez Collection and El Espacio 23 for Latin American and Caribbean Artists, based in the region and the United States.
