Fernando Laposse's exhibition grows design from desert ecologies — pearls, silk, cochineal and a living seed bank at Fereej Al Asmakh.

Design is a seed. It needs care to take root and bear fruit: time, water, light. Good design depends on a tacit knowledge that goes beyond technology or technique. It depends on craft and culture—something shared, inherited, learned through use.

When design is cultivated this way, it grows beyond the designer. It opens itself to others. Across fifteen years of practice, Fernando Laposse has become a sower as much as a designer. After years of studying and working in Europe, he returned to Mexico to work quite literally on the ground, alongside the rural community of Tonahuixtla in the semi-arid mountains of the Mixteca. There he has developed a unique design methodology rooted in systems rather than objects.

Instead of starting with form, he began with agricultural realities: soil degradation, disappearing native seeds, monoculture economies, and the fragility of rural livelihoods. From the land itself, he grew a practice in response.

For Design Doha and the Mexico–Qatar Year of Culture 2026, Laposse's practice of the designer as sower expands toward a shared geography of desert ecologies and global exchange. Historically, both Mexico and Qatar have been connected to global systems through the bounty of nature: pearls harvested from the Gulf, cochineal cultivated on cacti, silk moving across Asia and the Middle East as a connective thread. These materials fueled early trade, empire, and extraction.

Today, both Mexico and Qatar stand at an environmental and cultural crossroads, between resources that are extracted and systems that are grown. The exhibition presents new works that emerge from this tension. Pearls, silk, and cochineal are not treated as decoration, but as carriers of memory and ecological significance. Lamps with silk screens dyed in cochineal and embroidered with pearls filter light through histories of trade and cultivation.

A transparent resin table encapsulates pearls within its surface, echoing water flows and migration routes. Across these works, material becomes narrative, by tracing how value has been extracted from nature, and how design might instead cultivate more responsible relationships with land, matter, and time.

The project ultimately returns to its opening question: what can grow from good design? As a response, at the heart of the exhibition stands a living seed bank, proposing agriculture as culture, and seeds as tools rather than symbols. Drawing from common knowledge systems such as the milpa and the use of resilient, multipurpose plants like guaje, the seed bank becomes a site of exchange and learning.

Planted, grown, and adapted in Qatar, it resonates with broader efforts to grow food in the desert and imagine more sustainable futures. Design here does not end with the object, the gallery, or the museum. It extends outward: into the field.
