Spatial Sound Lab
Renowned experimental platform IKLECTIK are bringing their custom spatial audio system to FACT for an in-depth, two-day masterclass.
Who is this for? This lab is for sound artists, musicians, composers and performers who are curious about exploring the creative possibilities of spatial audio. Some experience with Ableton Live is essential, but no previous experience of spatial audio is required. Whether you're working with electronic music, experimental sound, live performance or sound installations, this is an opportunity to develop new skills, experiment with ideas and explore how sound can move through space in a live performance setting. We're looking for people who are open to experimentation, exchanging ideas and learning collaboratively. You won't be expected to present your work publicly, but sharing ideas and works in progress with the group is encouraged. Participants must be available to attend both workshop days on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 December.
What to expect Work directly with IKLECTIK's custom spatial audio system throughout the workshop. Learn from an artist with professional experience in this developing field. Learn how to use Envelop for Live’s spatial audio plug-ins made for Ableton. Get hands-on training in future-facing spatial technologies and multi-channel routing. Learn techniques for spatialising sound in real time across experimental noise, electronic composition, and multi-sensory performance contexts. With capacity limited to 12 participants, you’ll receive focused mentorship and ample time to experiment with the hardware.
What to bring A laptop with Ableton Live Suite and Envelop for Live (free) installed and ready to use. If you don't already have Ableton Live Suite, you can download a free 30-day trial . A pair of headphones. Existing audio files, stems, or virtual instruments you would like to test and spatialise on the 16-channel system. Most importantly, bring yourself. This lab is a supportive, friendly, non-judgmental space where people who share a passion for sound can experiment, exchange knowledge, and collaborate freely.
IKLECTIK IKLECTIK is one of the few grassroots organisations in the UK developing work with multi-channel and three-dimensional audio systems, which enables artists to compose in space, not just stereo; move sound through and around audiences; and explore listening as a physical and emotional experience. Sound, for them, is not background. It is architecture. It is the environment. It is something you step inside. IKLECTIK's technology is custom made. They know their equipment is rare — so they give artists the chance to learn and play with their immersive sound systems through residencies and training programmes. Giving artists the chance to develop practices they otherwise wouldn’t be able to access.
