Preceptor Foundations Workshop
IMPORTANT: Unit leadership approval is required to participate. Minimum of 6 students to confirm a class. If this is not met, the class will be cancelled and the students will be offered the option to transfer to another class.
DESCRIPTION This 3-hour workshop is tailored for experienced clinical staff transitioning to preceptors. It aims to equip them with foundational knowledge, practical strategies, and essential communication skills to effectively mentor, teach, evaluate, and document preceptees, as well as promptly address safety concerns.
OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to: Apply principles of adult learning theory to their precepting practice by adapting teaching methods to the specific needs and experiences of their preceptee. Demonstrate effective communication techniques, including the use of structured feedback models, to provide constructive and specific performance evaluations to their preceptee. Describe how implicit biases (i.e., generational differences, attitudes or opinions regarding - race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status or other characteristics) can impact a preceptor-preceptee relationship and develop strategies to bridge gaps and foster a collaborative learning environment. Accurately evaluate and document preceptee performance, competently utilize the Kahuna platform for tracking, and clearly define the steps for escalating immediate patient safety concerns to unit leadership.
