Somes Island Challenge
A 3.2km openโwater pointโtoโpoint swim from Matiu/Somes Island back to Petone Beach with included ferry transfer.
A harbour crossing steeped in history and natural beauty.
For the first time, Swimming Wellington will host the iconic Matiu/Somes Island Swim, inviting swimmers to experience one of the capitalโs most breathtaking open water challenges.
The adventure begins with a ferry ride from Queens Wharf or Days Bay Wharf out to Somes Island, the jewel of Wellington Harbour. After stepping onto the island and taking in its rich history and panoramic views, swimmers will gather at the wharf for the start of a 3.2km point-to-point swim back across the harbour to Petone Beach.
This isnโt a loop course or a casual bay dip; itโs a straight shot across open water, with the island shrinking behind you and the beach pulling you home. At a moderate-to-experienced level, itโs a rewarding test of endurance, navigation, and rhythm, all with the backdrop of one of New Zealandโs most iconic harbours.
Entry includes the ferry transfer and island visitor fee, making this swim as much about the journey as the distance.
Whether youโre chasing a personal milestone or simply soaking up the thrill of swimming from island to shore, this is one to tick off your ocean swimming bucket list.
