Legendary French director François Truffaut kickstarted his version of the French New Wave with The 400 Blows. This film continues the life of Antoine (Jean‑Pierre Léaud) eleven years later: now married and expecting a child, he drifts through a string of absurd professions and becomes emotionally distant. When his wife becomes pregnant he fixates on a Japanese woman as an escape.
More than the plot, the film is prized for its bittersweet beauty, relaxed pace, sharp humor and brilliant acting. It offers a chilled yet vital mood and stands as part of Truffaut's template of following a single character across years, later echoed by filmmakers like Richard Linklater.
