Vancouver Percussion Collective presents a programme of contemporary percussion works by Reich, Nobles and others exploring rhythm, resonance and time.

Concert of the SALT New Music Festival Vancouver Percussion Collective Four percussionists create a shared world of rhythm, movement, resonance, and physical gesture. In percussion music, proximity is essential. Performers listen closely to one another, coordinate precise movements, and shape musical time collectively. For the audience, sound becomes something physical as well as musical: impact, vibration, material, gesture, and space all become part of the experience.

The program travels through very different experiences of rhythm and time. Steve Reich's Music for Pieces of Wood builds intricate patterns from the simplest of materials, while Jordan Nobles's Temporal Waves unfolds through shifting textures and resonance. Other works explore sculpture, geography, natural forms, and different ways of transforming time through sound.

Together, the pieces reveal percussion as both an intimate and expansive art form—one in which the smallest gesture can set an entire musical environment in motion.

ABOUT VANCOUVER PERCUSSION COLLECTIVE

The Vancouver Percussion Collective is a Vancouver-based quartet whose members bring together musical training from Asia, Europe, and North America. Over nearly a decade, the ensemble has established a distinctive presence in Vancouver's arts scene through adventurous collaborations and original programming.

Projects have included Sandwaves , featuring a homemade glass instrument, and Pulse Party , a salon-style concert series celebrating Vancouver's percussion community. The collective specializes in world premieres, original works, and distinctive arrangements, performing everywhere from concert halls to outdoor stages.

Their instruments range from traditional percussion to unconventional materials such as rebar steel. Through collaboration, experimentation, and a curiosity about the physical possibilities of sound, Vancouver Percussion Collective continues to expand what a percussion ensemble can be.

ABOUT SALT NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

The SALT New Music Festival is a contemporary music festival based in Victoria, BC, bringing together British Columbian, Canadian, and international composers and performers.

The 2026 edition explores the theme of Proximity —closeness to one another, to nature, to the universe, and across differences of background, nationality, identity, and generation. Through concerts, outdoor events, movement, and shared listening, SALT creates encounters where new music becomes a space for connection, exchange, and discovery.
