Between Tides
Contemporary sculptures become places to play ping-pong in a free outdoor exhibition at Collins Park in Miami Beach. Presented by Public Art Fund in association with The Bass, Between Tides runs November 29–December 6 during Miami Art Week. Curated by Gabriela López Dena, the exhibition brings six playable works originally commissioned for New York’s Rockaway Beach into a new coastal setting: Moko Fukuyama’s Old School combines a salvaged boat, a tabletop and a sea monster inspired by Scandinavian and Japanese mythology. Las Hermanas Iglesias’ DiMeLo incorporates musical instruments, turning each game into a live composition. Ilana Harris-Babou’s for those of us who live at the shoreline pairs a terrazzo-and-concrete table with seating and ceramic beach objects, encouraging experimentation beyond competitive play. Carlos H. Matos’ Tlachco draws on Mesoamerican ballcourts, connecting ancestral traditions with contemporary recreation. Amalia Pica’s Fair Play uses eight staggered tabletops and maritime signal imagery to encourage simultaneous matches. SUPERFLEX’s Fish Ping-Pong is a pink stone table designed to function as a potential marine habitat if submerged. Paddles and balls are available to borrow free from the exhibition kiosk daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors may also bring their own equipment. On Monday, November 30, The Paddle in the Park Classic features matches involving artists and other art-world figures, plus a DJ, food vendors and entertainment, from 4 to 6 p.m. Admission is free; participants and prizes will be announced.
