Bach & Beyond
St Albans Chamber Choir performs Bach's motets alongside his family's works and modern responses, from Gjeilo to Higgins.
Alongside Bach's deeply expressive Jesu, meine Freude and Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, the programme explores the rich choral music of Johann Michael and Johann Christoph Bach. Their works are heard alongside modern responses to Bach's enduring influence, including Ola Gjeilo's luminous Serenity, Knut Nystedt's exhilarating Immortal Bach, and Gavin Higgins's powerful Cruelty Has a Human Heart, inspired by the St Matthew Passion.
A varied and compelling concert of profound devotion, drama and discovery – bringing together music from the seventeenth century to the present day, and revealing the many ways Bach's voice continues to resonate.
The concert will be followed by refreshments and an opportunity to meet and socialise with fellow concert-goers, members of St Albans Chamber Choir, and Musical Director John Gibbons.
