Workshop: Microtonal
Join Faqir Zulfiqar and Ben Eaton (Invisible Flock) for an exploratory workshop opening up the practice, traditions and stories behind the Microtonal exhibition.
Microtonal is an installation comprising 200 borindos (Boreendo, Bhorindo) — a clay wind instrument from the desert of Sindh, Pakistan, recently added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding list. Faqir Zulfiqar is the only known artist to play the borindo, making his practice vital to preserving an instrument at risk of cultural extinction.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to play the borindo as Faqir shares his musical practice alongside the traditions, stories and songs connected to this ancient instrument – offering a chance to encounter the borindo not simply as an object, but as a living musical tradition.
Produced by Invisible Flock in partnership with hcmf// and Centre for Cultural Ecologies in Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Huddersfield as part of the Cultures of Film programme; 2026 UK tour supported by Arts Council England through National Lottery Funding
