Join Heather Gray from The Creative Cut Studio for our latest workshop on offer, turning wool into art with Rug Hooking! Create a 6"x6" design. What's included? A 2.5 hour morning instruction workshop with supplies - only an embroidery hoop required. You will need a non-slip 10" embroidery hoop. A wooden hoop works with some fabric or masking tape wrapped around the inside hoop or a hoop with a ridge on the inside hoop. Hoops will be available for purchase also.
For this workshop, we will make either a landscape or fall pumpkin 6"X6" rug. It comes with a variety of yarns and fibres to make the hooking interesting. Yarn will be available as well to change out some colours if you like. After all, this craft allows the imagination to play! Your rug will make a great wall hanging, table mat, hot plate or pillow once it is hooked. Please note: This kit is handmade with hand-dyed yarn and wool cloth so colours and textures will vary.
What is contemporary Maritime rug hooking? Rug hooking is an 19th century North American settler's art which often turned cast-off clothing into useful, artistic works of art and rugs. It's a great way to express yourself. It's a creative, calming process that will engage all your senses. And it's easy to learn consisting of one stitch – pulling a loop of wool or fabric through a hole. About your instructor: Hi! I'm Heather Gray.
I'm a multi-faceted artist with a love for anything that involves fibres. I hook, sew, knit, upholster, embroider and more. I also play with watercolours, acrylics and stained glass. After hooking rugs for several years, I completed my rug hooking teacher certification with the Deanne Fitzpatrick Studio in Amherst, Nova Scotia. And I'm excited to share all that I learned with you! My husband and I recently settled in Ponoka and are loving our new community.
I'm originally from Nova Scotia and so the love for hooking crafts which ultimately led to me opening The Creative Cut Studio. As a retired military family, we have had the good fortune to travel the world and our beautiful country. Those adventures certainly added to my love for the arts, and I'm excited to share that enthusiasm with you. I have a strong sense of fun and a love for exploring new art forms and will most certainly get you excited about your learning adventure.
