Red Lines Package Launch
Parliamentary launch of the Red Lines Package with senators and legal experts discussing proposed legislation to align trade and defence with international law.
Senators Lidia Thorpe and David Pocock, Dr Sophie Scamps MP and the Association for the Promotion of International Law (APIL) invite you to attend the parliamentary launch of the Red Lines Package.
Bookings essential. To be able to get your Parliament security passes prepared in time, we need to have your ticket booked by 7 September 2026. The booking system will close after that date.
The Red Lines Package is a suite of legislative reforms developed collaboratively by Australian academics, experts, and civil society to ensure that Australia’s trade, investment, and defence relationships don’t contribute to genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and unlawful occupation.
If enacted, the Package would establish a framework under Australian law in which decisions about our trade, investment and defence relationships are governed by consistent standards grounded in international law and evidence, rather than selectively applied based on political preferences and the identity of the state.
The package will be launched at Parliament House on 15 September 2026 by Senators David Pocock, Lidia Thorpe and Dr Sophie Scamps MP.
The launch event will feature the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, Louise Adler AM, Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs AC, Professor Sarah Joseph, Robert Richter KC and Rawan Arraf, who will discuss the current failings of Australia’s foreign policy in light of our legal and moral obligations under international law.
At a time when the demands of many communities for justice are left unheard and the application of international law is under extraordinary pressure, we hope you will join us as we introduce groundbreaking legislation and begin an important national conversation about the measures that Australia should put in place to ensure that we don't contribute to crimes overseas, irrespective of where the violations occur, or by whom they are committed. The launch will be followed by a reception and networking event.
