Jonathan Higgins / Chihiro Ono

念 · RE:CITE brings together artists whose practices move between performance, sound and research, asking how listening is shaped by the technologies, bodies, histories and power structures around us.

For the second edition of 念 · RE:CITE, composer and sound lecturer Jonathan Higgins gives a talk on how technology is designed to hide its effects and how he pushes it towards failure. With a live performance, he demonstrates how he uses technology as a collaborator to uncover the underlying noise. Japanese-born violinist Chihiro Ono 小野智尋 joins the evening with an acoustic performance that opens another perspective on sound, noise and the possibilities of listening.

念 · RE:CITE is a new event series co-curated by Zhuo Mengting and angela wai nok hui. Embodying a Chinese character that can suggest thought, feeling, attention, reading and mind power, 念 · RE:CITE sees research and artistic practice likewise as interconnected ways of thinking and making.

The series in 2026 autumn will feature three artist-researchers: Julie Rose Bower (October), Jonathan Higgins (November) and Annie Goh (December), alongside guest artists and musicians to be in dialogue.

Mengting Zhuo is supported by the Early Career Promoter Fund which is managed by PRS Foundation and funded by Arts Council England using Supporting Grassroots Music funding from DCMS.

About the Artists

Jonathan Higgins Jonathan Higgins is a composer and performer based in London. His music focuses on exploring how noise can be utilised as a creative and generative tool. He works across a variety of different media, including fixed electroacoustic music, instrumental music, live electronics and sound installations, and performs regularly as an improvisor using a custom setup of hand modified CD players. His music has been performed, prized and published both nationally and internationally.

Chihiro Ono

Born in Chiba, Japan, and based in London since 2000, Chihiro is a highly skilled interpreter of classical music from the 9th century to the present day, as well as new, experimental music, improvisation and performing theatre. As a chamber musician and leader, she has performed on stage and media worldwide with various established ensembles as their member.
