Pol Taburet
Where the supernatural dwells in the everyday. This extensive solo exhibition of Pol Taburet's work will bring together painting, sculpture and installation, including existing works and new productions conceived for the occasion.
The exhibition will offer a view of Taburet's figurative language, which draws on art history, contemporary visual culture and Caribbean cultural and spiritual traditions, as part of a wider exploration of the intersections between the familiar and the supernatural, lived experience and dreams. Taburet's work unfolds in a world where things are never entirely what they seem.
Human and non-human forms coexist, bodies mutate, gestures remain ambiguous, and domestic or everyday situations acquire an uncanny charge. Taburet absorbs and transforms a heterogeneous field of images into a language of his own; bodies gather, gestures repeat and objects assume an enigmatic presence, lending certain scenes an almost ritualistic quality.
Rather than simply illustrating dreams, the works follow a dream logic in which different temporalities and realities can exist simultaneously. In this respect, Taburet's work can be situated within a broader discourse around magical realism, which, from its beginnings in European painting of the 1920s to its postcolonial present, has sought to reveal the strangeness and unseen dimensions of the familiar, thus challenging Western notions of reality.
Taburet's practice affirms that the magical is not opposed to the real, but rather expands our understanding of it, revealing more dimensions than those immediately available to the eye and inviting us to look at the world anew. Biography Pol Taburet (b.
