Parataxis

Soy Capitán is pleased to present "Parataxis", a solo exhibition of new paintings by Grace Weaver (b. 1989, Vermont). The exhibition brings together a stringent selection of new works, whose practice is drawn to the quiet rituals of everyday life – sitting, drinking, gathering.

Exploring an archaic pictorial logic of bodies, vessels and furniture, Weaver constructs paintings of quiet ceremonial gravity that at the same time balance on the threshold of a dry, formal humour. She draws on Mycenaean frescoes, Mesopotamian seal stones, and the writings of Homer and Joyce, whose principle of sequence without connective tissue — the parataxis that gives the show its name — also runs through her own compositions.

Within a single wet plane, she transforms familiar domestic scenes into stages of a quiet ceremony, in which figures, vessels and furniture rhyme visually with one another, and colour alone carries the emotional charge.
