Journées is an evening of mediative, complex contemporary music. The concert features two world premieres of pieces by Julian Stuart-Burns, with the second set to a work of video art by Adrian Schwalbe.
The first piece, Worn for violin and cello, is a work that reflects on the erosion of frescoes and renaissance art as they are exposed to the elements over long stretches of time. The piece weaves in segments of 10th-century chant and 15th-century polyphonic mass, dwelling on subtle sonic shifts in the instruments to highlight microcosmic passages of the original music.
The second piece, Journées for mixed chamber ensemble and video, is a quietly thrilling expedition through constantly morphing harmonic landscapes. As the resonances evolve from clashing, abrasive clusters to expansive, highly-consonant chords, the ensemble moves closer together in tone, their signature sounds melding together as one.
The video accentuates these transformations, emphasizing the durational, droning aspects of the music while allowing space for moments of stark contrast.
