Florida 101 is a hands-on educational program to help you learn about our local ecosystems, species, and how to live efficiently in Florida!
Florida 101 is an introduction to Florida designed for both new and seasoned residents of Volusia County who are interested in learning about the ecology of Florida, how to best take advantage of our unique state and its natural qualities, and how to protect it. The course is taught by five of your local UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County faculty with specialties in each of the topics covered.
The five-week course will cover a wide range of topics including Florida weather and ecosystems, coastal and inland ecosystems, identification of interesting native organisms and potential pests, what kinds of plants will grow best in Florida yards, agriculture in Volusia County, making your home energy efficient and safe through Florida heat and hurricanes, and how to be a responsible Florida resident. The course also includes a guided ecology walk at Tomoka State Park, an eco-buggy tour at Riverbend Park, and an educational farm tour.
This course will meet on five consecutive Fridays: January 22 and 29, February 5, 12, and 19 from 9 am – 12 pm. All courses will take place at the UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County office (3100 E New York Ave, DeLand) except January 29, which will take place at Tomoka State Park. On February 5 and 12 you will begin at the office and then you will self-drive to another location for a field trip. There is a course fee of $55 that includes all five weeks of the program.
This is a five-week class that meets on five separate days. By registering for this program, you are registering for all five days. While we understand that things come up and you may not be able to attend one week, please be aware that refunds are not given for days not attended. If you are unable to attend more than 1-2 weeks, we encourage you to wait to register for a future offering of the course.
