field:work | Sounding Systems (Max/MSP)
A hands-on introduction to Max/MSP with sound artist Louis Quek — explore synthesis, audio processing and generative sound systems.
A Max/MSP Workshop on Sonic TransitionsHow might we listen to, reinterpret, and reimagine the sounds of our everyday surroundings?
Led by sound artist Louis Quek, this hands-on workshop explores the creative possibilities of sound through recording, sampling, and experimentation with everyday materials. Using audio recordings and contact microphones, participants will discover how familiar sounds can be transformed into sonic material for experimentation and composition.
Working with Max/MSP, a visual programming environment for sound and interactive media, participants will build their own soundscape systems inspired by four-track tape loopers. Through layering, repetition, and variation, we'll explore how recordings and samples can be manipulated, transformed, and recombined into evolving, imaginary soundscapes.
The session invites participants to approach listening as a creative practice, discovering new possibilities in the sounds and materials that surround us. What to Bring Please bring a laptop with Max/MSP installed, along with a pair of headphones or earphones.
Max/MSP offers a free 30-day trial, which you can download from the official website. Please install the software before arriving so you're ready to participate in the workshop! No prior experience needed! About the Artist Louis Quek is a Singaporean sound artist and sound designer working across sound installation, live audiovisual performance, and computational systems. His practice explores the relationships between sound, space, perception, memory, and materiality, drawing on psychoacoustics, machine listening, and feedback systems to create evolving sonic experiences that challenge how we listen to and experience our surroundings.
Workshops & Explorations is a monthly series within 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱:𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, inviting participants to experiment with different tools, materials, and approaches to art-making across media art and creative technology.
