Etching Printmaking Workshop
Hands-on introduction to drypoint etching: scratch, ink and press your own prints on plexiglass plates — no experience needed.
Introduction to Drypoint Etching Explore the expressive possibilities of drypoint etching in this hands-on introduction to printmaking. Students will learn how to create drypoint prints using plexiglass plates, developing images through direct, incized and drawn lines. Using a sharp etching tool, participants will scratch lines into the surface of the plate, creating textures, marks, and variations in line quality that give drypoint its distinctive, rich character.
The class will introduce the basic principles of preparing a plexiglass plate, transferring or developing an image, inking and wiping the plate, and using a traditional printing press to produce prints on dampened paper. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with line, texture, cross-hatching, and mark-making while discovering how pressure, depth, and direction can affect the final printed image.
No previous printmaking experience is required. This workshop is designed as an accessible introduction for beginners while also offering experienced artists an opportunity to explore a direct and spontaneous approach to printmaking and refresher in printing press etiquitte. By the end of the session, participants will have created their own unique line-based etching prints and gained a foundation in the drypoint etching process.
