crash/catapult/float
A sci-fi visual theatre installation reimagining the Golden Record, asking what Earth would say if it could speak for itself.
In 1977, a team of scientists, artists and engineers tried to answer an impossible question: how would you explain life on Earth?
The result was the Golden Record: a whale song, human greetings in 55 languages, the sound of a heartbeat and other soundbites of life, captured on a disc and catapulted into the stars aboard Voyager 1. For decades, it has captured imaginations as humanity's strange and loving self-portrait, delivered as a mixtape for the universe.
Today, crash/catapult/float tackles that same question, but asks an additional one: what would the planet have said, if it could have spoken for itself? Presented as a sci-fi installation and performance piece about the magnificence of our planet, it is a love letter to what has been, and a song for the future.
Supported by Creative Scotland through their multi-year funding, crash/catapult/float is a living time-capsule for the here and now; a space to celebrate the beauty and complexity of life, and to ask what we leave behind when we're gone.
