Avec Jon Roi Mendones, Josefino "Chino" Toledo, Orkestra ng Bayan, Inc., Rodney Ambat, UP Symphony Orchestra
UP Symphony Orchestra performs reworkings of Bach and Romantic masterpieces plus Beethoven's Eroica across two orchestral evenings.
The UP Office of the President, the UP College of Music, and the UP Symphony Orchestra, in cooperation with Orkestra ng Bayan, Inc., present Continuum and Heroic Symphony.
CONTINUUM - Aug 28, 2026 · Fri · 6 PM · UP Theater Conducted by Josefino "Chino" Toledo, Continuum follows a single thread: how composers reshape the music they inherit. It opens with three reworkings of Bach — Stokowski's Chorale from the Easter Cantata, Hindemith's Ragtime, and Toledo's Bach‑Bach‑'Toh — where Baroque counterpoint meets ragtime and Filipino folk rhythm. The second half turns to the late Romantic, moving from the warmth of Reinecke's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra, Op. 283 to the sweep of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 to close the evening.
HEROIC SYMPHONY - Oct 16, 2026 · Fri · 6 PM · UP Theater Led by conductor Rodney Ambat, the orchestra brings to life works that capture courage, national pride, and triumph. The program opens with Verdi's La Forza Del Destino Overture paired with Santos's Lapu-Lapu Overture, features trumpeter Jon Roi Mendones in Arutunian's Trumpet Concerto, centers on Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 "Eroica", and finishes with Moncayo's Huapango.
What does it mean to be a hero? This concert explores that question through music that faces fate and transforms struggle into celebration, from local valor to Beethoven's revolutionary fervor.
