Charting the Course: SMAST’s Evolution and the Next Horizon in Marine Science
with Kevin D.E. Stokesbury, Dean, Commonwealth Professor
Part of the Natural Heritage of Fairhaven Series
SMAST hosts world-class research programs tackling the most urgent issues facing our oceans—from climate impacts and food security to offshore energy coexistence and coastal resilience. Designed for high-impact innovation, our graduate programs train the next generation of marine scientists to translate foundational research into real-world solutions. In this talk, we will trace SMAST's institutional journey, examine the current scientific and resource challenges shaping our work, and explore emerging opportunities that will define the future of marine science.
Note: this program is held in the Unitarian Auditorium, located across from the library at 102 Green Street
This program is funded in part by a grant from the Fairhaven Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
Series Description: The Natural Heritage of Fairhaven series is a collaboration between the Millicent Library, the UUSF Green Sanctuaries, and Climate Reality MA SouthCoast. The Natural Heritage of Fairhaven Series offers free and ongoing programming exploring the rich connections between landscape, ecology, and culture in our coastal community. Through talks on biology, history, art, and more, the series aims to deepen our understanding and appreciation for the natural beauty of our town.
