BIG SIT!
Join a worldwide 24-hour birding count from a 17-foot circle — sit, spot species, and share snacks with fellow birders.
It's like a Worldwide Tailgate Party for Birders! How many bird species can we see from a 17-foot circle?!
The Big Sit! is like a Big Day or a bird-a-thon in that the object is to tally as many bird species as can be seen or heard within 24 hours. Some people have called it a "tailgate party for birders." We've created a circle 17 feet in diameter on the Deck, and we'll sit inside the circle for 24 hours, counting all the bird species we see or hear. That's it. Find a spot, sit in it, have fun. Then submit your findings. Oh! And you're welcome to bring a dish. Or snacks. Or drinks (non-intoxicating, of course!).
Participants are allowed to come and go from the circle—especially for the purpose of bringing food back into the circle—and the circle need not be be occupied for the entire 24 hours. There must be one person in the circle for the duration of the count, however. Feel free to set up a time you'd like to participate if you like, or come and go at will.
There are Big Sit! circles all over the world, including Guatemala, India, the Netherlands, England, Vietnam, and New Zealand.
The Big Sit! is an annual, international birding event founded by the New Haven (Connecticut) Bird Club.
Admission to the Park is $5/adult, children 12-and-under-free. No further fees for the Big Sit!
