A poetic performance and film screening exploring Yoruba naming, diaspora identity and the idea of return

ETP Studios Presents: Adétòkunbọ. Translated as 'The Crown Has Returned from Abroad', this piece is a poetic exploration leaning into the tension between identity and heritage; destiny and return.

ETP Studios is an interdisciplinary studio committed to connecting people, places and ideas — particularly across Africa and the diaspora — through the power of narrative. Through these narratives we facilitate meaningful conversations between the Black diaspora and continent, to raise collective consciousness of our interconnected realities and destinies in order to compel intentional action towards a brighter tomorrow.

Our mission has thus far been expressed through:

The Parlour - a conversation series which invites an exchange primarily between Africans of different backgrounds to foster mutual understanding of artistic practices and the social realities that inform them

Burning Questions - a satirical poetry show held in London and in Lagos, casting a critical eye on the environments we inhabit, provoking reflection on the absurdities of the every day.

Our latest offering, Adétòkunbọ encourages members of the diaspora to interrogate our identity and our relationship with return to the places of our heritage. The piece uses the significance of naming in Yoruba culture as a point of departure to grapple with ideas of destiny and belonging on the journey to becoming.
