Art Kintsugi workshop
Hands-on 4-hour Kintsugi workshop with Yoko Kawada to learn traditional repair techniques and take home a finished piece.
Kintsugi is a century-old Japanese craft where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using Urushi lacquer and gold dust based on the wabi sabi philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection. The process transforms much-loved worn items into a beautifully crafted new piece of art.
In this 4-hour step-by-step hands-on workshop led by Yoko Kawada, you will learn the fundamental skills of the Art Kintsugi method, following the principles of traditional Kintsugi while using more accessible alternative materials which enable completion within the class. At the end of the class you will take home a piece of your Kintsugi art and the skills to start your own repair projects at home.
The workshop will cover the history and philosophy of Kintsugi, with case study discussions. All tools and materials are included. An Art Kintsugi starter kit for home projects will be available to purchase on request.
Important notes: • This workshop is for ages over 18 years. • Not suitable for pregnant persons. • A small piece of ceramic to repair will be provided — participants should not bring their own broken items for repair. • Materials include resin, epoxy and gold metal (not 24K gold).
About Yoko Yoko studied interior design in London in the 1990s and later established an art studio in Sydney. Her work combines handcraft and material technology and she teaches Kintsugi and Makie in workshops.
