LIEN is a one-on-one dance performance by Lewis Major that explores human connection, empathy, and shared moments through an intimate, ten-minute encounter between a dancer and a single audience member.
Concept and Experience
LIEN is designed as a deeply personal and ephemeral performance where one dancer and one audience member share a ten-minute encounter on an otherwise empty stage . The performance begins with a brief conversation, allowing the dancer to understand the audience member's thoughts or memories, which then inform a spontaneous, improvised dance. Each performance is unique and will never be repeated, emphasizing the singularity of human connection and the power of shared moments . It addresses themes of community, empathy, and reflection , offering a space for self-awareness and contemplation away from the distractions of everyday life
The performance moves fluidly from private to public, intimacy to extroversion, and individual to collective, highlighting the interplay between personal experience and shared humanity
The one-on-one dance performances were conceived by Australian choreographer Lewis Major in response to pandemic social distancing. The resonance however, of sharing intimate space with a stranger, within such carefully held boundaries, is something that transcends covid times.
Lien manages to feel both universal and deeply personal; it's an extremely rare and special piece of dance, like watching a poem write itself.
Audience Experience
Audience members are invited to step barefoot onto a dimly lit stage , creating an intimate and reflective atmosphere. The dancer engages in a preliminary conversation, then performs to a hauntingly beautiful score , such as Debussy's Clair de Lune , crafting a dance that resonates with the audience member's shared memories or emotions. The experience is described as both universal and deeply personal , akin to watching a poem unfold in real time.
