DATAS: The Data and the Sovereign

**Who controls our data, personal sovereignty, and political freedom? Answers are offered by the exhibition DATAS: The Data and the Sovereign, where Czech and international artists explore in their works how computing technologies, automation, and digital infrastructures undermine personal and state sovereignty. The project is co-funded by the European Union under the Creative Europe program.**

Roaring lions no longer pose a threat to us; today, other creatures lurk: algorithmic systems, data infrastructures, and forms of governance driven by artificial intelligence that operate beyond the reach of effective democratic control.

This group exhibition foreshadows one of the most important struggles awaiting us in the coming decades: the fight for our own sovereignty at a time when data and computing technologies are increasingly slipping beyond legal and political control and fundamentally reshaping the freedom of human action. Algorithmic systems influence public debate, automate and manipulate decision-making, and dictate the nature of war—software code is rewriting the foundations of democracy. The exhibition brings together voices from the fields of art, philosophy, and technology to explore how personal and national self-determination can survive in the face of the forces of surveillance capitalism and authoritarianism.

Soubor zastoupených děl zahrnuje širokou škálu forem: od interaktivních instalací přes narativní filmy až po software art. Díla nepůsobí jen jako kritika, ale modelují etické alternativy k digitálním režimům, které nás vytěžují. Výstava je členěna do tří tematických konstelací. Část Stíny Leviatana se věnuje datům jako svrchované moci a zkoumá algokracii, kybernetickou bezpečnost a automatizované vládnutí. Další, Ostrovy neposlušnosti, se soustřeďuje na různé formy infrastruktury – energetické sítě, podmořské kabely a datová centra – a ukazuje suverenitu jako formu logistické a výpočetní moci s ekologickými důsledky. Poslední část výstavy, Písně odmítání, obrací pozornost k subjektu a zkoumá křehkost osobní autonomie v podmínkách profilování, predikce a sledování, kdy se obraz stává funkčním prvkem systémů kontroly.

Výstava vznikla s podporou programu Evropské unie Kreativní Evropa v rámci projektu DATAS: The Data and the Sovereign (2025–26), který slouží jako platforma pro umělce ze střední a východní Evropy, jižního Kavkazu a dalších oblastí ke společnému zkoumání toho, jak výpočetní technologie proměňují politickou moc i osobní sebeurčení.

K výstavě vychází stejnojmenná publikace.
