Three-concert intimate classical series at Hugh’s Room with Ryan Huang, Brett Polegato & the Cheng² Duo
Hugh’s Goes Classical Series in the Green Sanderson Hall at Hugh's Room, 296 Broadview Avenue
Curated by Eric Friesen and Angela Hewitt Hugh’s Room Goes Classical is the brainchild of Board member Barbara Jesson, who invited pianist Angela Hewitt and broadcaster and speaker Eric Friesen to curate a first classical season for the Room.
After Angela played Hugh’s Room for the first time in December 2024, she and Eric were inspired by the intimacy and acoustic excellence of the Room, and quickly imagined their first season. Angela and Eric felt the Room must showcase major classical artists, like Angela herself and baritone Brett Polegato, in an up-close-and-personal format, rarely experienced by the audience for artists of that calibre. Hugh’s Room is perfect for a more informal style of presentation, hosted by Eric Friesen, with the artists speaking briefly but effectively about their programs and themselves.
They also felt it was a perfect venue and style of performance for emerging Canadian artists, like pianist Carter Johnson, first Canadian finalist at the Van Cliburn Competition, and mentored by Angela, to be introduced to a Toronto audience. The same for the teenage phenomenon from Oakville, Ryan Huang, already a Lang Lang International Music Foundation Young Scholar and Young Steinway Artist. And finally, for the season ender, the brother/sister Cheng² Duo – cellist Bryan Cheng and pianist Silvie Cheng, who already have stellar international careers.
