Crease, Fold, Transform

Join us for this introductory talk followed by a drop-in activity for all ages! Folding is everywhere and in all scales — from how a leaf packs inside a bud, how a protein takes form, how a satellite stows for launch, and how a single sheet of paper becomes a structure that stands on its own.

We will begin with a short presentation that traces this story. Folding is something inherent to nature, and humans have long used it as a tool. Over time that tool became a craft, the craft became an art, and the art became a science. As an example of where all of this leads, we will then move into a hands-on activity.

In this workshop, participants of all ages will explore the science and art of folding using nothing but their own hands. No experience needed.

Participants will discover the transformational power of folding by turning flat sheets into strong three-dimensional forms, explore the geometry hiding inside everyday folds, work with a single unit cell and discover how the same building block can be folded and combined into many different shapes, and build something to take home.

The heart of the workshop is to invite people to be curious with their hands: given the same unit cell, no two people have to arrive at the same shape. Starting from identical pieces, participants will fold and assemble their own polyhedra, comparing the many forms that emerge from one shared starting point.
