Memory Remains

Some memories are preserved in museums. Others survive only because someone refuses to let them disappear.

On Aug. 14, Artists Against the Kremlin returns to Amsterdam with Memory Remains, an exhibition exploring one of the defining questions of our time: What happens when memory itself becomes a battlefield?

Before our eyes, the Kremlin is erasing inconvenient collective memory. History is being rewritten, archives are being destroyed, victims are being forgotten and entire narratives are disappearing from public space.

Memory Remains is a reminder that memory is not something we simply inherit. It is something we choose to protect.

This exhibition preserves the stories the Kremlin seeks to silence and highlights the histories it tries to erase. It explores historical erasure, propaganda, censorship, archives, collective remembrance, personal testimony and the fragile relationship between memory and truth.

Because memory does not preserve itself — people do. And every act of remembering is also an act of resistance.

For the third consecutive year, Amsterdam’s renowned cultural centre De Balie will host Artists Against the Kremlin’s exhibition of critical contemporary art.
