With Carmen, Compagnie Maurice et les autres reinvents Georges Bizet’s masterpiece as an immersive, living, and deeply contemporary experience. Here, there is no frontal stage, no red velvet curtain: the performance unfolds in public space, along a journey where the audience becomes a traveler. Guided from one location to another, you move through the landscapes of the work; the square, the tavern, the arena - each becoming a living tableau. Music surrounds you, bodies brush past, glances intersect. You are no longer watching the story: you are inside it. Because Carmen is more than a famous opera. It is a story of freedom, desire, and violence; strikingly relevant today. “She leaves him, he kills her”: behind the passion lies a tragedy that echoes the issues of our time. Performed by a collective of actors, singers, and musicians, this itinerant version blends theatre, music, and performance in a spirit that is both joyful and politically engaged. Jeanne Desoubeaux’s staging transforms space into a poetic and political playground, where each location becomes a set, and every movement a form of dramaturgy. Conceived as a “landscape opera,” the piece invites us to see differently, to feel together, and to reclaim theatre as a space of encounter; at the heart of the world.
