Alternative School presents: COMPUTER LAB Saturday, August 1st — Marble Bar Detroit electro, techno, and bass. The city’s own strain, not the same funk George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic were playing, but rooted in it all the same. Through the groundbreaking work of The Electrifying Mojo, Detroit kids were exposed to Kraftwerk, Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, and sounds from far beyond the city. Somewhere in that collision of funk and machinery, the Belleville Three, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, shaped what became Detroit techno. Everyone on this bill is still working inside the world they opened up. Indoors, Keith Tucker opens the room. Aux 88 co founder, Puzzlebox Records head, and a key architect of Detroit electro since the late 80s, bringing a direct, machine driven approach that sets the tone early. Shawescape Renegade follows, moving between techno and electro with a raw, functional edge that keeps things moving without breaking the flow. Ectomorph closes it out — the duo of Erika and BMG, also the minds behind Interdimensional Transmissions, a long running Detroit imprint known for stripped back electro and techno focused on tension, space, and heavy rhythm. On the patio, JMT opens things up, a KMS Records affiliated DJ moving fluidly between house, techno, and ghetto tech with a versatile, club focused approach that sets the early tone. Detroit In Effect follows — DJ Maaco at the controls, carrying one of the city’s most enduring electro projects, known for raw drum programming, heavy bass pressure, and a mix of electro and Detroit club styles active since the early 90s. A long standing name in the scene, continuing the crew’s legacy after the passing of co-founder O’Dell Perry, aka DJ PDog. Two rooms, one lineage. Get there early.
