Canyon
Quartet improvisé mené par Sylvie Courvoisier et Jerome Deupree pour une musique libre et énergique
Improvised music, in the hands of its finest practitioners, resembles a fiercely contested sporting event with an unpredictable outcome. With the original quartet Canyon, it is easy to see that anything is possible.
Drummer Jerome Deupree provided the rhythmic backbone to the alternative rock of Morphine; cellist Lester St. Louis made his name in Jamie Branch’s Fly or Die; guitarist Joe Morris is, according to The Wire, “one of the deepest improvisers active in the United States”; pianist Sylvie Courvoisier is a colossus of inventiveness, described by Deupree as someone who keeps the group “on the edge of their seats, because the piano seems unable to contain her”.
In truth, everything in Canyon is unrestrained: the energy, the sonic exploration, the four-way communication, the vibration, the urgency.
