Still Life Workshop — 4 daysPainting a still life is a celebration of technique, form and style. This workshop will guide you through clear techniques to create form and enhance your individual style. The process of painting is broken into clear stages so you have space to fully explore each step. The principles apply across many artistic disciplines and suit beginners and experienced painters.Day 1 • Introductions and explanation of the course • Explanation of materials and ensuring everyone has what they need • Discussing composition methods and lighting for a still life • Drawing out the composition in paint; measuring techniques and identifying masses of light and dark • Laying down the first layer of colour focusing on value and large shapesDay 2 • Reassess previous day • Demonstration of the day's focus • Build up shapes and colours with explorations of light and colour theoryDay 3 • Reassess previous work • Demonstration of the day's focus • Explore the concept of edges to create form and different texturesDay 4 • Option to continue working on the first painting or to do a one-day alla prima • For continuing students: further rendering, pushing the still life to a finish and focal point concepts • For alla prima: consolidate learned principles and experiment with quicker wet-on-wet painting
