Bi‑monthly meeting of the Société Jersiaise Numismatics Section with talks, discussions and occasional visits on Jersey coinage
The Numismatics Section of the Société Jersiaise is for all who are interested in coinage, whether a long‑time collector or someone who wants to know more about the subject. All are welcome.
Jersey didn’t have its own coinage until 1840 and relied on coins from France and other countries for trade. When Jersey coinage was established there were 12 British pennies to a British shilling, and 13 Jersey pennies to the same shilling.
Numismatics unlocks many aspects of Jersey’s past and is key to its history.
Meetings & Activities: the Section meets bi‑monthly. The meetings are on the third Wednesday of those months between 7.30 and 9.30pm. Work sessions vary from round‑table discussions to on‑site visits. Lectures by visiting colleagues are interspersed between work meetings when possible.
Aims: to research and study coins and related items (medals, banknotes, tokens) with special interest in Jersey money; to publish and promote these subjects through lectures, walks, Bulletin articles, booklets, exhibitions and social media; to involve enthusiastic non‑experts in this research area.
Section officers: Chair David Le Long; Secretary Nicolette Westwood.
