Jochen Lempert

Details and patterns of nature are transformed into analogue black-and-white photographs by German artist Jochen Lempert (b. 1958). Trained as a biologist, he blends scientific observation with artistic vision, revealing the poetry in everyday life. Jochen Lempert’s works offer a space for careful and attentive observation of our surroundings. He invites us to slow down, to notice and appreciate the hidden subtleties of the natural world: the delicate structure of a bird’s wing, the intricate body of an insect, reflections of light, shifting shadows, and the movement of wind across water.

Encouraging a sensory mode of exploration, his photographs are displayed unframed and arranged in small groups that reveal surprising connections between plants, animals, objects, and people. In a world defined by acceleration and excess, slowing down becomes an act of care, reminding us — through Lempert’s gentle observations — of our shared connection to all living things. Lempert’s seminal body of work spans more than three decades, and the exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg marks his first solo presentation in Denmark. He has exhibited at major international institutions and is represented in collections such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
