Jeff Preiss - Orchard Documents

Jeff Preiss' Orchard Documents are a series of experimental film collaborations that the filmmaker made together with other members of the cooperatively run Orchard Gallery, which operated between 2005 and 2008 on New York City's Lower East Side. Made within the context of exhibitions organised by the gallery's members, each document utilises different filmic techniques and formats for representing artworks and exhibitions. As such, an exhibition history is not only recorded, but the Orchard Documents reveal aspects of artistic practices usually unseen through conventional documentation. For Preiss, the gallery was raw material from which to generate moving image work. In doing so, the Orchard Documents proffer new ways of documenting art from a subjective point of view.

Several of the Orchard Documents were the subject of Orchard Gallery's final exhibition, Spring Wound, before it closed in 2008, yet have never been shown in their entirety. At Cell Project Space, all of the Orchard Documents will be exhibited together with several offshoots that Priess has made since, as well as supplementary materials related to Orchard Gallery's exhibitions.

A public programme of events will accompany the exhibition throughout October and November.
