A live discussion with NUS psychologist Stuart Derbyshire exploring what freedom really means and why it matters.

We often think of freedom as the ability to choose. Yet every choice is shaped by countless influences, from our upbringing and relationships to our biology and the world around us.

So what does it really mean to be free? And if freedom isn't as straightforward as we think, why has humanity cared so deeply about it?

Come challenge your assumptions with Stuart Derbyshire. Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Stuart has spent more than three decades studying the mind. His research sits at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience and some of philosophy's biggest questions - from consciousness and suffering to what it means to be free.

When asked how he decides what is worth saying or sharing, he often returns to a simple filter: “Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?”.

An evening when slow bar meets reality check, we'll unpack what freedom means, and examine how our beliefs about freedom shape how we participate in today's world. Equal parts sharing, discussion, and the occasional “wait… that's uncomfortably true”.

The Space: EarlyAfter (EA) Set beside New Bahru, EA is a Singaporean-owned café and cocktail bar co-founded by former nurse Vivien & Irene, conceived as a space for pause, connection, and recovery through food and presence.

Whether you're an advocate of human-centric products or learner of sorts, this is your chance to geek out with fellow curious humans. Bring your listening ears, opinions, and sense of humour. We'll provide the space, the vibes, and research on a corner of the world.

Fair warning: conversations may get unexpectedly thoughtful.

Bits and Bobs 6.45pm: Doors open with an iced tea. 7.15pm: Dinner service. 7.25pm: Introductions. Stuart kicks us off. 8.15pm: Three questions, multiple perspectives. Share your story about the topic, or listen and chime in when discussions get interesting. 8.45pm: Wrap-up, mingle, and connect with fellow humans.

This session also marks the first time we're featuring a community supporter, ChatAndBuild, founded by Christel Buchanan, who believes conversations like these are worth creating. Her support helps more people discover SoCrates and, over time, brings new perspectives into the room.

P.S. Do consider using PayNow instead of card payment. It helps us reduce platform fees 12-15%, meaning more of your ticket goes towards dinner, printing materials, and keeping SoCrates running. We really appreciate it!

Refunds We understand plans change. Refunds are possible a week before the event. If there’s something urgent on the day of, please reach out to us on Luma or Instagram @socrates.spot
