Intermezzo

The Bonnefanten collection comprises around 25,000 objects. Only a very small selection is displayed in our galleries. That’s actually a shame.

For this small presentation, we’ve selected a number of artworks from our storage rooms. Works that we are eager to show, but that don’t always fit within the context of our current exhibitions. Some are ‘standalone pieces’ that don’t quite connect with the rest of the collection. Others have either never been shown in our museum or haven’t been on display for a long time. Nonetheless, these are works of high quality.

Hidden gems

Bonnefanten's paintings by James Ensor and Carel Willink, for instance, are frequently loaned to museums both in the Netherlands and abroad. This selection of lesser-known works was largely created in the first half of the 20th century, a period we usually don’t highlight on this floor. They are united here in an associative manner and demonstrate the richness and diversity of the collection of the Bonnefanten.
