For The Record: A Black Archive Experience

Join archivist and cultural curator Egypt Otis (aka The Hood Archivist) + DJ, electronic music artist and Black Music label head Deon Jamar + Chicago DJ, producer and Division 81 label head Sonny Daze + DJ, archivist, artist & Blue Moon Radio founder Saylem Celeste for a summer day party celebrating Black dance music legacy and an interactive trivia experience.

From 2pm–4pm, The Hood Archivist will lead us in a Name That Black History Sample trivia contest—citing Black cinema, spoken word, speeches, and historical recordings that have been sampled across music genres. Participants will compete for prizes awarded to the first- and second-place winners while exploring the rich intersections of Black history, culture, and sound.

The event will also feature a special pop-up exhibit from The Hood Archivist’s collection of rare books, newspapers, audiovisual recordings, and other primary source materials centered on Radical Black Memory. Attendees are invited to browse, research, and engage with archival materials that illuminate the stories, voices, and movements that continue to shape our collective history.

After 4pm, Deon Jamar, Sonny Daze and Saylem Celeste will take over the decks and guide us sonically and sensorially through music that will move you ‘til the sun is down. Pop-up cuisine from @houseofinsatiable will be available too! Menu forthcoming

We’ll be requesting $10 for entry but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
