Familiar Touch
Film · Bulldog film
Ruth, a retired cook, prepares breakfast in her sunny and cosy kitchen like she has done thousands of times, but small and puzzling errors begin to punctuate her routine. Her son takes her to live in an assisted living facility, which she had previously selected for herself, but she feels lost and adrift. Ruth begins to accept the warmth and support of the care workers and learns new ways to ground herself in her body, even as her mind embarks on a journey of its own. An impressive and compassionate debut, made by former care worker and after months of workshops with a retirement community, is a coming-of-age story for a time of life we rarely see on screen. Told with warmth and humour, weaving in the material and sensual through Ruth's love of food and a delicately powerful central performance from Kathleen Chalfant.
