Awfully Artful: Color Theory Gone Wrong

Awfully Artful: Anti–Color Theory Lab invites participants to learn the basics of color theory—then deliberately break every rule.

We’ll start with a quick, hands-on overview of how colors traditionally work together, including harmony, contrast, warm vs. cool tones, and complementary pairings. Then we flip the script.

Using chalk pastels on black cardstock, participants will create bold, expressive artworks that reject “good design” on purpose. Smudge, layer, and blend various colors into unexpected combinations that challenge balance, harmony, and control.

We provide all supplies and light snacks. There are no rules, no artistic experience required, and no step-by-step instruction. This is simply an opportunity to explore your creativity.
