New York City's Unsane assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended industrial and hardcore influences. As a power trio, Unsane relied upon a hammering rhythm section, a searing Telecaster howl, and distorted vocals that resembled the sound of a man trapped in the New York Subway system.

Having met at Sarah Lawrence College in the late '80s, the original incarnation of Unsane began playing New York's seediest haunts in 1989 and developed their trademark sound at clubs like CBGB's. The band issued a series of singles and EPs before recording their self-titled debut. Personnel and recording lineups changed over the years; Unsane released notable albums including Total Destruction and Scattered Smothered and Covered, and the Singles: 89-92 collection compiled their early work.
