Dublin, 1904. The elderly Misses Morkan and her niece, Mary Jane, host their annual dinner and musical soirée for friends, old and new. Among them are Gabriel Conroy (Donal McCann) and his wife Gretta (Anjelica Huston), a Galway woman. John Huston's subtle direction of a wholly distinguished ensemble of Irish actors perfectly captures the social atmosphere and emotional nuance of Joyce's original text. For Huston, the film served as an elegant and melancholic farewell to Ireland, and to life itself.
