The band became one of the most successful rock acts in the world, selling over 120 million records and producing era-defining classics including Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, and Brothers in Arms.
Together with frontman Mark Knopfler, John helped shape a band whose distinctive blend of rock, blues and storytelling lyrics earned them global acclaim. Their landmark 1985 album Brothers in Arms became one of the best-selling albums of all time and cemented Dire Straits' place among rock's most influential bands.
