Crafts, Games and Play · DIY · Teens: 13 to 19 years · YOUmedia

In this sewing program we will learn to create a Japanese-style bento bag, which will be sustainably made with one piece of material, from start to finish! Perfect for beginners, the session will cover essential skills like basic pattern drafting, fabric cutting, and machine sewing. Through step-by-step guidance, you will gain hands-on experience while crafting your own stylish and functional bento bag- ideal for carrying lunches, small items, or as a unique gift. By the end of the program, you will leave with a completed bag and a solid foundation in sewing techniques to inspire future projects.

All supplies will be provided for this program.

Compton Quashie (they/them) is a Black, queer artist, designer, educator, and cultural worker whose interdisciplinary practice engages the intersections of fashion, performance, and diasporic studies. Grounded in both material research and community-based methodologies, their work examines how Black diasporic communities utilize textiles, fashion, movement, and sound as technologies of cultural preservation. Born and raised in Chicago’s Hyde Park, their practice is shaped by Black cultural spaces as sites of knowledge production, autonomy, and collective care.

This event is for teens ages 13-19.

Radical Fit is a Chicago Public Library YOUmedia initiative dedicated to teen fashion-making with a special focus on gender identity and equity.
