Independence Day Open House
Featured Events · Revolutionary Ideas · Special Collections · All Adults · College Students · Older Adults · Young Adults (Ages 20-34)
When they declared independence from Great Britain two hundred and fifty years ago, representatives of the American colonies published a series of truly revolutionary ideas about government and about the nature of freedom. But from the earliest moments of independence, whenever the government itself has failed to uphold its revolutionary ideals, individual Americans have done the difficult and often dangerous work of fighting for justice.
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, Special Collections will be holding a one-day display which places foundational texts of American democracy alongside documents created over the past 250 years by individuals and by movements that have fought for freedom and for equal rights.
First, stop by the Leventhal Map & Education Center to view multiple original printings of the Declaration of Independence that are held in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department. Then, come by the Exhibition Hall on the first floor of the historic McKim Building to see additional historic objects and talk with staff about the material.
No registration is required to attend either of these events.
The Associates of the Boston Public Library provides critical funding to support the long-term preservation of and enhanced public access to BPL special collections.
