A chaired conversation on feminist renovation in the Gaeltacht with Annemarie Ní Churreáin and Betsy Cornwell.

Bean an Tí

Feminist Renovation in the Gaeltacht and the Literary Life

A conversation between poet Annemarie Ní Churreáin (Hymn to All the Restless Girls, GalleryPress, 2025) and author Betsy Cornwell (Ring of Salt: A Memoir of Finding Home and Hope on the Wild Coast of Ireland, Renegade, 2025) moderated by journalist Adrienne Murphy.

In their latest books, through differing literary styles, Ní Churreáin and Cornwell explore the patriarchal marginalisation, stigmatisation and control of "outsider" women – including single mothers and other female "troublemakers" – both historically and today. Cornwell and Ní Churreáin are among the world's 1 per cent of solo homeowners who are women; they have each so far circumvented the banking system by purchasing homes through community co‑operation. Cornwell's Old Knitting Factory in Connemara is Ireland's first creativity and rest retreat for single parents, with childcare provided. Ní Churreáin's Coláiste Phádraig, a former Irish-language college, is being renovated as a writers' studio with archive, library and performance space for the local Gaeltacht community.

If you require wheelchair seating, a companion or carer ticket, or will be attending with a guide dog, please contact the Hawk's Well Theatre Box Office in advance so the team can assist with your booking.
