Since antiquity, the best world observatories were overseas in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.The rise of American design and craftsmanship led to the creation of bigger and better machines. After the devastating wars of the early 20th century, American prosperity and technology brought giant telescopes of unprecedented size and abilities.
