From Crowd to Community: Making Large Classes Feel Small
UBC Professor Brett Gilley leads a practical session on techniques to improve teaching and learning in large university classes.
This event is part of the Summer Institute taking place from August 17–20, 2026.
Teaching a large class can be a daunting task that requires different skills than you might use with smaller groups. With so many people in a room you might wonder if you are reaching the students at all. Luckily, research shows that with the right techniques, learning outcomes in large classes can be just as strong as those in smaller ones. And good news — these skills can be learned.
Join Brett Gilley, Professor of Teaching in Earth Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia, for a discussion about the challenges and benefits of teaching in large classes and how to improve your large-group teaching skills.
